The process of being here
I am Jaime Schmidt, I am alive right now.
I have been creating since the time i was able to form memories. My artistic practice embodies manifestations of idea, emotion, and healing.
My early work was informed by my mentally and physically ill father. I was a witness to corruption within the healthcare system concerning mental health and well being of impoverished persons. My father was a self-acclaimed cave man. He worked specifically with stones- collecting them from rivers, building our home and other structures from them. When his mental and physical health declined, he was stuck in this declining depressive state, consistently muttering about his need to connect with stones, one can interpret as disconnection from nature.
My work is process. It is about being present with myself and my surroundings. In order to overcome traumas, I found refuge within my body through meditation and artistic practice. Recognizing thought patterns has been crucial for my own healing. My process begins with body- feeling, breathing, observing any felt sensations. It then moves outward to the sounds, sights, tastes, and environmental factors. I find that by uniting my body with the surroundings, I am able to clear my mind and focus on the moment I am existing within.
With my work-I am investigating the materials at hand.I work exclusively with natural and/or recycled materials. I invite viewers to become experiencers. To feel, taste, touch, smell, and see my work. I am attempting to merge life with art, so that messages are not to be consumed, but rather experienced.
