wood, thread, mirrors, cushion, candle, lighter, lighting by Adam Taylor
This Portal served as a space for solitude, reflection, prayer, and remembrance during the first 10+ gathering for many individuals coming out of isolation. Following 2020 quarantine we have become more sensitive to crowds and are navigating new ways to be in shared space. This installation offers an intentional space to reflect and meditate facing away from the surrounding sound art gathering. Leading up to this hypercube, we see our reflection in mirrors guarding the space, a cushion and candle invite participants to confess what they have learned through the process of collective pause. The name of this installation references the catholic church as it's played a major role in forming our society, colonization, and forced assimilation. The missionaries who built churches on indigenous land brought with them disease which plagued native people around the globe. At night this portal allows the experiencer to pass through into the star speckled night sky with an intention to pass through this moment in history carrying forth all that was exposed.
